The genre of the shooter game has been around since the earliest days of electronic entertainment. In these action-packed games, the player uses a gun or other projectile weapon to do battle with a series of enemies. A game is often divided into various levels or missions through which a player must progress. The goal of most is to kill as many enemies and make it through as many levels as possible without being shot (killed) yourself.

If you are looking for a good shooting type game, you might want to take into consideration the following factors:

Ammo and Weapons – Some games include only a single weapon, while others will have multiple weapons. Depending on the game, new weapons may be earned from making progress in the game, found while exploring the environment, or bought with currency earned through gameplay. Ammunition may be unlimited or limited. In the latter case, players can usually find or earn additional ammo throughout the game.

Perspective – Shooter games fall into two categories of perspective, first person and third person. In a first person shooter, the player views the action through the eyes of their character. Many of the latest and most popular shooter games fall into this category. In a third person shooter, the player can see the environment as well as the character they are playing. Third person shooter games usually feature a top view or side view of the game. Third person shooters are often found in retro and online arcade style games.

Environment – Shooters can take place in any setting you can imagine. Many are set in realistic locations that mimic actual places, often featuring a wartime or military theme. Others take place in futuristic worlds, and still others in wholly fantastic realms. There are shooter games set in the Wild West, in outer space, in historical battles, in the air, in the forest, even in haunted houses.Shooter games can be found in a wide variety of styles to cater to nearly any age or taste.

Players – Most basic shooter games are single player. Console or arcade games may also include a two-player mode, with the two players either working together or fighting as enemies. Online games may include multi-player modes supporting any number of players across the globe. In these types of games, the gameplay may be “every man for himself” or the players may be grouped into competing teams or sides.

Shooter games require alertness, fast reflexes, and expert coordination. The temptation to rush in with guns blazing can be deadly to the novice player. Limited ammunition and obstacles such as innocent bystanders will force the player to observe and act carefully. While some games may require no more than pointing at a target and by clicking the trigger button as fast as possible, most will reward restraint and accuracy over an unfocused firestorm of bullets.
